the Alan Ladd building
1968

Rich in History and Reimagined
for Today’s Professionals

From 1968 to 2011, The Five Hundred was formerly known as the Alan Ladd building and until 2002, home to the legendary Alan Ladd Hardware Store. Designed by Hugh Kaptur (1931) and Larry Lapham (1935-2004), this landmark building was “The Place to Shop” for locals and the famous such as Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Liberace, Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and many more. Today the beautiful mid-century modern designs remain showcasing the past and the future as The Five Hundred exudes Palm Springs history at its finest.

The Five Hundred stands as a testament to Palm Springs’ golden era of modernism

The Five Hundred’s clean geometry reflects the modernist principles that defined desert design.

Kaptur, a contemporary of William Cody and Donald Wexler, infused the structure with a refined balance of functionality and grace, echoing the optimism and craftsmanship of 1960s Palm Springs.

Today, under the thoughtful restoration of John Monahan, The Five Hundred has been reimagined for contemporary professionals while retaining its architectural soul, a living bridge between Palm Springs’ storied past and its vibrant present.

The interior of The Five Hundred reflects mid-century modern refinement through warm dark woods, slate stone, and brushed silver details. Natural light floods the glass-lined lobby, illuminating minimalist furnishings in sand and soft turquoise tones. Contemporary artworks adorn the halls, creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests.

“It’s a landmark building with good bones, an excellent location, and a great history.”

– John Monahan, Owner & Developer, The Five Hundred
